Our Favorite Fashion Moments During NYFW

New York Fashion Week came to a close last Wednesday and week took a moment to digest all the beautiful moves both on and off the runway made by the incredible Black makers in fashion. Completely blown away by all of the creative expression and execution, we sat down with Brooklyn based Fashion Designer Monay Taylor of MONAY. to share some of her favorite design moves with the collective! Naturally, we’re rooting for everybody Black. So what makes some of these NYFW moves a collective fave? Read more below!

MARRISA WILSON

MT: The Guyanese-American designer displayed a beautiful collection of colors and textures throughout her SS23 showcase this past fashion week. Accessorizing the hair with sculptural clear beads reminiscent of water droplets, was the perfect touch for the runway and to pay homage to her roots in Guyana known as The Land of Many Waters. This contrast color blocking moment is an absolute fave and I love the tones of the green, paired with the beret that really seals the deal. The collection was inspired by an expressive print story - gestural palm prints, multihued and watercolor brushstrokes.

FBF METAL ATELIER

MT: Afropunk respectively had its own fashion highs this year. Singer Lucky Daye was spotted draped in a beautifully jewel colored toned ‘metal sweater vest’, by Brooklyn’s own FBF Metal Atelier. Carefully crafted with true artistry - the way the light hits the links while he’s performing in this piece serves as a vision itself.

LAQUAN SMITH

MT: Showing at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum seems so fitting for this collection. The colors, fabrics and shapes are definitely an immersive experience that can reflect various elements. This orange number with corset boning detail is stunning because it serves so many different moods: sexiness, modesty, power, and elegance all in one. LaQuan did a great job bringing something new yet sticking with his roots in seductiveness.

KENNETH NICHOLSON

MT: First glance at this look can be intriguing just because you’re trying to figure out what exactly you’re looking at. Kenneth Nicholson’s “CODING” look features a brocade ball gown and crinoline appliqué over a cotton long sleeve button up shirt, with a white twill waistcoat. The unconventional designer’s SS23 collection portrays fashion that is reminiscent of The Office, but runway. Kenneth’s aesthetic is inspiring because he is clearly and freely designing for himself, out of bounds and authentically.

PUMA

MT: The new SS23 collection names June Ambrose as it’s creative director and we love to see it. June exclaims “Life Is a Sport”, being inspired by life itself for this presentation. The collection ‘FUTROGRADE’ elevates athleisure wear. This look in particular is most exciting and cool because it features a dramatic head turban made with a Palomo jersey knit fabric, costume designer and maker Soleita Kabwasa stitched this full turban having 3 yards to work with, and delivered a stunning piece that stands out.

THEOPHILIO

MT: The Jamaican born designer Edvin Thompson went back to his roots with the “Homecoming” collection, featuring the vibrant colors of the island that take you on a trip throughout the show. What is most eye catching about Theophilio’s SS23 collection, is the feature of new handbags from the brand. Collaborating with jewelry designer Chrishabana for the hardware, the bags showcase an arm hugging shape, made with leather like materials simple enough that it can become a new wardrobe staple for us all.

SERGIO HUDSON

MT: Sergio pumped up and modernized 80’s glam with the showcase of his SS23 collection, and we enjoyed the blast from the past. Throughout this whole collection you can find cohesive motifs placed beautifully on various looks. This geometric black and white stripe crop jacket serves as a timeless and fashionable moment. While working this collection during NYFW, I was stunned by mostly everything. Sergio says this is a glam slam, and we’re happy to be entering his world.

SUKEINA

MT: Omar Salam, creator of Sukeina is a Haitian born designer that’s immensely talented with structure and originality. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen anything like this before. The deep striking reds for SS23 commands attention. Omar expresses his gratitude to be able to work with women in such capacity conveying their strength and singularity with with his garments. The draping, finishing and construction of this look is by far the best I’ve seen this season.

JUNNY

MT: Collaborating dance, art and fashion into her presentation is commendable to say the least. This entire showcase was refreshing to see a vision come to life through movement. The collection celebrates the intersection of creativity, determination, and perseverance. Each look blends warm neutrals and African fabric with lux wool, silk and cotton knits. The use of upcycled fabrics creates a showcase that was both elegant and playful.

BRANDON BLACKWOOD

MT: The black excellence that seeps throughout this moment is truly inspiring. Sheryl Lee Ralph not only accepted her first overdue Emmy, but she did so while wearing black designer Brandon Blackwood in their first gown ever made accompanied with their handbag as well. The gown features a sultry black velvet shell with a crisp orange lining. There were many firsts here, and I know we are all happy to witness it.
